A338 Bournemouth spur

The team behind the successful £22 million upgrade of a 5.2-mile stretch of Dorset’s busiest road was praised for its “exceptional effort” in delivering the rebuild of the A338 Bournemouth spur road on time and within budget. Cllr Peter Finney, deputy leader of Dorset County Council, said: “From outline design to construction, the Hanson staff and supply chain have provided us with a highly professional service.”

The improvement work was carried out through the Dorset Highways Strategic Partnership, a long-term collaboration between Hanson and the council on its road maintenance programme. The project, which was completed without an accident, had a strong sustainability focus. All the old carriageway asphalt – about 75,000 tonnes – was recycled into the new road and a specially designed surface course was used that needed lower volumes of aggregate to make, and fewer vehicle movements to lay.

Project manager Ian Price said: “It’s a great example of the benefits of collaborative working and value engineering.”
